Our Different Stairlift Types

The decision to install a stairlift is often a difficult one to make, but when compared with the alternative of moving, or only living on one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. The idea of deciding which stairlift is right for you, and having it fitted, can be a daunting one, however they can usually be fitted in a couple of hours and we promise to help and guide you every step of the way.

Stairlifts fall into two basic categories; straight and curved; it can be confusing to know which type you need. Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as you might think and we’re here to help and advise you every step of the way.

Straight stairlifts cannot travel around any bend or corners. They are suitable for use where a stairlift only needs to travel in one straight line; for example, from the hall to the landing.

Curved stairlifts can travel around corners, across intermediate landings and even up spiral staircases! Designed for your staircase, your track will fit snugly and give you a super smooth ride. Tracks are made to order following a survey of each individual staircase to ensure the perfect fit and we promise to work with you and communicate at every stage to ensure minimal disruption to your home.

    Grants

Firstly, approach your local authority – you may be eligible for a grant to help towards the cost of your stairlift.

    Choosing a supplier

With many suppliers available – do your research and get two or three different quotes. Think about choosing a local supplier who would be able to get to you quickly in the event of a breakdown. Would you prefer a larger company or a smaller, family-run one. Look at reviews on the internet – for example if you Google ‘Priority Stairlifts Reviews’, you will be able to read lots of vetted reviews from genuine customers on verified websites.

    Book a survey

Most surveyors will be able to give you a guide price over the phone and then check they have everything cover when doing the survey. All stairlift advisors are experts – our own surveyor, Sarah, has been surveying and giving advice for nearly 5 years and has measured hundreds of stairs – there hasn’t been one she hasn’t been able to fit a stairlift into! Book a free, no obligation survey and quotation with Priority Stairlifts today!

    New, reconditioned or rental?

Do I want a new, reconditioned or rental stairlift? Most companies now offer the opportunity to buy a reconditioned stairlift and many now offer rental options. When considering either of these options, always check the age of the stairlift, whether it has been recently services and ask about the warranty cover.

    Curved or straight stairlift

Do I need a curved or straight stairlift? There are different stairlift types. Simply put, if your staircase has a bend in it, you will need a curved stairlift. If your stairs go straight up with no bends, you need a straight one.  If you’re not sure, your stairlift surveyor will be able to advise you.

    Additional features

Would I benefit from any additional features on my stairlift? All stairlifts come with a few additional features which may be useful for certain users. For example, you may benefit from a powered swivel seat which means the seat will automatically turn at the top of the stairs for you to disembark. Another example would be a top or bottom parking bend which means a curved stairlift could travel all the way up from a hallway to a landing. Again, your stairlift survey will be able to advise you on the most suitable option.

    Aftercare and servicing

What after-care will I get with my new stairlift? Most suppliers offer a one year warranty with 24hr call out. Check whether your call would be answered immediately and what the call-out wait is. Also ask if you get any additional services – for example we offer a free service (usually £75) after 12 months of purchasing your stairlift. We also offer a 24/7 response with any breakdown calls being answered by a person, not an answerphone.

    Installation process

What happens once I have chosen my supplier? Once you have made the decision, most stairlifts can be installed within a matter of days and take a maximum of 3 hours to install. Once installed, you will be given a thorough demonstration of how to use the stairlift by the installation engineer. Your supplier should also visit you on the day of installation to check you are happy with everything and to demonstrate using the stairlift again (it’s sometimes difficult to take everything in at first so a refresher often helps).
